Comprehensive College/University Credit Agreement

Regular credits for off campus seminars and workshops at the Humboldt Field Research Institute, Maine

In consideration of mutual benefits and interests, the Humboldt Field Research Institute (hereinafter termed the Institute) and (hereinafter termed the College/University) agree to cooperate to

(1) help students of the College/University participate in advanced seminars or workshops at the Institute on subjects not taught at the College/University,

(2) make it cost-effective for these students to earn credits for seminars or workshops at the Institute and to use these credits towards degree requirements,

(3) provide an administrative process by which the College/University can approve the Institute's advanced seminars or workshops for transfer credits, and

(4) encourage discussions of other interests which the the Institute and the College/University may have in common.

Upon request of a Department Chair, the University/College hereby agrees to recognize that any 5 full-day seminar or workshop at the Institute qualifies for the equivalent of 2 graduate or undergraduate credits, based on a minimum of 10 intensive contact hours per day, plus any special requirements instructors may have, such as a practicum or a written or oral presentation during the seminar or workshop. A syllabus and instructor CV will be provided by the Institute upon request. With a letter of support from the Department Chair, the student may sign up for a seminar or workshop in order to qualify for 2 credits, which may be used for degree purposes. The student has the option to earn 1 additional credit by completing a special project with the instructor(s) after the conclusion of the seminar or workshop (arrangements vary).

Credit options for seminars less than 5 days long may be considered.

The Institute will issue a certificate of satisfactory completion of all requirements to qualifying students, and will send a credit transfer transcript to the College/University Registrar, indicating the number of credits and grade to be awarded (A+ through D) for off campus studies.

The Registrar’s address is as follows:

Each student will formally sign up with the College/University for an Institute seminar or workshop as an independent study course. The standard tuition costs and fees the student pays to the College/University will be used on the student’s behalf to pay the cost of the Institute's tuition and fees (generally not including room and board). Any difference between what the student pays to the College/University, and what is paid to the Institute, will be retained by the College/University, though a portion of this difference may be allocated for scholarships for its students at the Institute.

The Institute will only charge the student a fee of $25 to cover the cost of the certificate and transcript.

This agreement or any part thereof can be amended by mutual agreement of both parties in writing.
