An open letter about the future of the astronomy program of Eagle Hill and an appeal on its behalf

To all who envisage the future of astronomy at Eagle Hill,

The Eagle Hill Institute is located within the very last dark sky region of the eastern American seaboard. Its campus lies on the 235-foot summit of the Dyer Neck peninsula in Steuben, the only inhabited peninsula summit on the eastern Maine coast, and the only peninsula between Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park and Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge.

In recognition of the fact that eastern Maine’s dark sky is a much under-appreciated rare resource that deserves greater respect and interest, we are hereby proposing the construction of a multi-level year-round astronomy center on the summit of Eagle Hill.

The institute is well-positioned to expand upon its decades of experiences offering teaching programs in the natural history sciences by now committing to offering teaching programs in astronomy. What we are envisaging is a full spectrum of learning opportunities that will be meaningful to all visitors, from school-age children through adults, from amateur astronomers to those with professional interests in astronomy.

How is the design of the astronomy center being envisaged?

How is the astronomy program being administered?

There are many ways to support the astronomy program.

Membership ... We invite you to join the Friends of Astronomy, an informal group that supports the astronomy program with their annual membership and active involvement.

Donations ... Donations are much appreciated and needed. They are promptly acknowledged and are tax deductible under IRS guidelines, since Eagle Hill is a nonprofit tax-exempt (501(c)(3) organization.

Volunteering ... Volunteers are playing ever more important roles at the institute.

On a personal note, I always feel deeply moved by the guests I have had the privilege of getting to know during our many years of hosting events. The diversity of their interests and backgrounds is truly is amazing.
