The cultural and events center on the western slope

A bold question ... What will it mean for coastal eastern Maine to have a year-round cultural and events center within which music performances can be staged within a fine art museum and library setting, all with a sunset view from within the center looking out over Gouldsboro Bay towards Cadillac Mountain?

Interest in the music program has outgrown the capacity of the Commons Building. With this in mind, the cultural and events center on the western slope will provide much-needed more elegant and expanded spaces for performances, a waiting (green) room suite for musicians, rooms for teaching master classes, and rooms for hosting musicians-in-residence. As envisaged, the building will also serve other functions. In addition to serving as a library and fine art museum, it will also serve as a venue for hosting occasional small symposia and conferences, as well as some public and private events.

A parallel campaign ... Our campaign for the new music program home within the cultural and events center is running in parallel with our campaign for the natural history sciences, which will fund a residential wing, making it possible for concert guests to stay overnight and linger at Eagle Hill.

Location ... We have committed to the expansion of the campus on the western slope of Eagle Hill. Those who have been to the western overlook, which we call “Lover’s Leap”, know how spectacular the views at sunset are overlooking Gouldsboro Bay, with Cadillac Mountain and Schoodic Head in the background. The overlook is designated as forever wild. The cultural and events center will be located North of it, but will offer comparable views from its different levels.

Sketches (renderings) will be linked from this page.

A building design charrette ... We welcome involvement to help envisage the scale and design of the music wing. We will be sharing architectural designs with the goal of seeking ongoing comments as plans keep evolving.
