Since 1987, Eagle Hill has been offering seminars in the natural history related arts, mostly focusing on media used in scientific illustration (such as pen and ink, carbon dust, silver point, acrylics, pastel, watercolor, etc.). Guided by a professional artist, participants proceed from rough sketches to finished works in media of their choice. Participants learn to appreciate the importance of fine composition while preparing and interpreting preliminary sketches. Lectures, discussions, and demonstrations provide background information that encourages knowledgeable experimentation. The small size and relaxed workshop atmosphere facilitate interactions among the instructor and participants, allowing the instructor to individualize the instructional program for the week. Participants with different skill levels are welcome. Participants may let instructors know ahead of time what their special interests are.
Plein air artist's retreats are offered during the three peak fall foliage weeks on the Coast of Maine. These retreats are similar to our nature retreat weeks, i.e., they are personal retreats for artists who would like to spend a contempative week painting outdoors. These retreats are mentored, in the sense that a leading plein air artist will host each week. As such there is no formal teaching, but there will be . Each week ends with an open-house art show which is open to the general public.
