Building goals for "Perspectives" 2023–2024
A paradigm shift by way of new buildings … We are working on plans and grant applications for two classroom buildings and a building with residences and paired independent study rooms.
We are asking members of the extended Eagle Hill family to consider the catalytically-strategic merits of expanding the campus of Eagle Hill by way of the following projects. The understanding is that these projects will lead to new program developments.
- Residences ... A new residential building for year-round use, with comfortable and reasonably elegant rooms, especially single rooms, rooms for couples, and rooms for close friends. The provisional plan calls for 16 rooms.
- Studios ... A reasonably comparable count of individual-sized study rooms for year-round use, i.e., inspiring spaces that will be assigned as private labs, studios, studies and/or offices, etc. These rooms will be seamlessly bridged to the new residential building by way of a connected walkway or hallway.
- Classrooms ... Two spacious modern classrooms, both slightly larger than our current largest classroom, also seamlessly bridged to the accommodations and study rooms. The two old classrooms will be retired and converted to workshops, e.g., for the institute’s nature-themed ceramics initiative and for expanding our wood working capabilities and expanding our computer-controlled machines “maker space”.
- Location … We are ready to commit to the expansion of the campus on the western slope of Eagle Hill. Those who have been to the western overlook, which we call “Lover’s Leap”, know how spectacular the views at sunset are overlooking Gouldsboro Bay, with Cadillac Mountain and Schoodic Head in the background. The overlook is designated as forever wild. The buildings will be located North of it, but will offer a reasonably comparable view.
- Costs … Construction costs nowadays for all building projects are considerable, but are more reasonably manageable on a collaborative basis.
- Design charrettes … We will be hosting charrettes to seek design suggestions and evaluate design proposals from competing architects.
Parallel building plans ... We are discussing plans for two other buildings, but these are outside of the scope of our "Perspectives" 2023–2024 Campaign for Natural History Science at Eagle Hill. They will both be the focus of a separate fundraising campaign.
-
Cultural and events center ... This is planned for the western slope of Eagle Hill.
-
Astronomy center ... This is planned for the summit of Eagle Hill.
