The Prairie Naturalist (ISSN 2766-8096 online, ISSN 0091-0376 print) is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original articles and notes focused on natural history research in the North American Great Plains. It was founded in 1969 by the North Dakota Natural Science Society, later renamed the Great Plains Natural Science Society, which published it as a print journal through 2020.



The Prairie Naturalist is the official journal of the Great Plains Natural Science Society.

The Prairie Naturalist is indexed in Web of Science (clarivate.com) and by way of author entries in Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Its indexing coverage is expected to become comparable to that of the Institute's first 3 journals (Northeastern Naturalist, Southeastern Naturalist, and Journal of the North Atlantic).
